Juan Chocoy

Juan was born in San Juan La Laguna in 1983. For many years he was dedicated to artisanal fishing and was the President of the Fisherman’s Association of San Juan La Laguna.

In 2008 he received his first guide training in birdwatching, as well as developing birdwatching opportunities in natural protected areas.

In 2009, Juan successfully completed a best practices workshop focused on the environment and culture for community tourism.

In 2015, 2016 & 2017, he received his certification as a Community Tourism Guide, Basic Birdwatching Guide, and Advanced Birdwatching Guide. The last two were through the Audubon Society.

He recently updated the birding list for the birds of San Juan La Laguna for the Hotel Uxlabil, a local business where he has been working for the last 5 years.

Juan has a family with his wife and 5 children, who they have taught to love and respect nature since they were young.

While he enjoys observing birds, his passion in photographing emblematic species like the Horned Guan and the Belted Flycatcher, two species that can be found nearby and showcase the importance of conserving our natural areas.
